evenings Quakers
started in the 17th
century. George Fox is generally acknowledged as the founder of
Quakerism, the name originated when he was in court in Derby, he
declared “that the time had come for men to quake and tremble
before the Lord”. So the judge said “So you are Quakers
are you?” and the name stuck. Our
official title is “The Religious Society of Friends” Quakers
believe that God can be sought and found at all times, in all places
and that there is “that of God” in everyone. Quakers
are not concerned about dogma, creeds and rituals, we emphasise the
teachings of Jesus rather than making doctrinal statements about
him. This openness helps us to appreciate the insights of all
faiths.
The
meeting for worship begins as soon as the first worshipper sits down
in silence. The silence may be broken when someone feels that he or
she has something to say which will deepen and enrich the worship.
Anyone is free to speak, pray or read, providing it is in response
to a prompting of the spirit in the course of the meeting. The
meeting for worship concludes when two Elders shake hands.
